    Appropriate clapping only please

Tonight I had the State of the Union on TV while I was feeding Sophia her dinner.  When she was finished, we moved into the living room to play and the President was still speaking.  She's been a little fixated with the TV lately, so I wasn't that surprised when she went to stand in front of the TV (as in, close enough to put her hands on the screen).  Then the funniest thing happened.  You know how like 1/3 of the State of the Union speech is clapping?  Well, Sophia could see that the people on TV were clapping and she starting clapping, too!  She looked excitedly back at me as if to say, "Look at me mommy, I'm clapping, too!!" and I had to frown and tell her, "Honey, we don't clap for George Bush... put your hands down."  Ha! Ha! Ha!  Esen had already gone to play soccer, so there was nobody else there to appreciate the serious oh-sorry-momma-I-didn't-know face that she gave me.

    Cage match?

Baby and dog go into the dog crate, only one of them comes out alive.  I'm pretty sure that's how we're going to settle it.  That may be the beer talking, but it sounds reasonable to us in our current sleep-deprived-and-seriously-tired-of-keeping-the-girls-separated state.

    11 Months

I took these pictures a few days ago when Sophia was still pretty sick, but enjoying a brief bit of relief from the ear infections.  Although she's definitely doing much better by now, her nighttime sleeping is a crazy mess so Esen and I are walking around like zombies (the slow-moving kind, not the new super-fast kind that you see in today's horror movies).
    DSC03746DSC03759DSC03771DSC03773
These photo shoots just get more and more funny.  The little post-it note that says, "11 months" doesn't have a chance... it was in her hands before I could even get the camera aimed.  And then sitting on the couch turned into this "fun" little game where she would hurl herself dangerously forward in an attempt to nose-dive off the couch to certain injury... laughing all the while at how funny it was to see her mama lunge forward to save her time after time.  Trusting soul.

    Another first...

... but not really the kind you want.  I took Sophia to the doctor this morning after she was running a fever all night last night.  Diagnosis: ear infections in both ears.  Now is that anyway to celebrate an 11-month birthday!?  I think not.  Poor kid.  We thought she might be headed for ear infections after battling a cold for more than a week, but when the doctor checked them this past Saturday, they were still clear.  I guess that nasty ear bacteria just needed a few more days to grow.  The good news is that she likes the medicine, which is pink and apparently delicious, and it should have her feeling better in just a few days.

    Half-full or Half-empty?

Glass half-empty point of view:  I wonder how many hours I have spent with a baby in my arms, trying to nurse her to sleep?  Countless!

Glass half-full point of view:  I wonder how many hours I've gotten to spend with a baby in my arms, nursing her to dreamland?  Not nearly enough!

I don't know what's going on with me, but I just look at Sophia and our precious time together differently these days.  I think maybe it's because all of her walking and other toddler-like activities (responding to tickling, flirting with us to get her way, etc.) just make it so clear that her baby days are behind her.  I'm thrilled with all the progress she's made toward becoming a wonderful, independent little terror of a toddler, but isn't mommy allowed to whistfully look back on how quickly those baby months flew by?  Everyone tried to warn me... <sigh>

Oh what a weekend it was! (ala Esen)

Playing at the park (who can pick from among these pictures?!  I know we're biased, but these are just all keepers!):

    DSC03675DSC03679DSC03684DSC03691DSC03696DSC03697DSC03700DSC03701DSC03704DSC03707

The last picture is actually from the following day, when we went back and had a nice little family picnic.  As you might have noticed, the park was not really packed.  These silly Californians think that 60 degrees weather is too cold for children to play outside.  Sophia didn't mind, she was very interested in her surroundings.  On the second day, we even got to see a squirrel and many crows up close.  The only thing she did not really enjoy was going down the slide by herself.  The expression on her face reminded me of the time we took her sledding in ND and when her grandpa thought she was old enough to man a sled by herself.

And in case that isn't enough, here's a video of her in action (permanent link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7065218864227386498&hl=en):

Saturday evening... a baby shower for our friends Lauren and Maria, our favorite lesbians who are pregnant with twins in a slightly non-traditional way (Maria's fertilized eggs implanted in Lauren):

    DSC03705

Let me tell you guys a little bit about our trip to the real fairly-land.  Yes, we did go to this baby-shower and you get to read the story from my perspective.  I like Lauren and Maria but I was kind of skeptical about going to a baby-shower in the first place.  I know Jess had good reasons for taking me along, it would have been hard for her to go there alone with Sophia and I am also friends with the hosts.  In any event, it occured to me en route to this baby-shower whether I would be the only heterosexual male in that place?  I have been around homosexuals before, I like them and certainly have no problem of hanging out with them... but a house full of them!!!!  I didn't know if I was ready for this.

When we arrived, it became clear to me (in lightning speed) that I might have been the only male in this house.  It was packed with women, some of them even pregnant.  I looked around, hoping to find someone of my sex.  I spotted a kid who was probably 9 or 10... and I also spotted a short-haired person whose arms were twice the size of mine.  Had I seen her from a distance, I might have had my hopes up but even in the dim lights of this "party", it was obvious that this person was no man.  She was actually very nice and reminded me a friend of mine.  Well, to conclude my search for a fellow male person in the party, I was the only man for about 45 minutes.  We did get 3 more men (whose sexual orientation probably did not align with mine) 20 minutes or so before Jess decided to save me from the party.  Frankly, I am not sure the sex of the guests mattered that much.  Being in a baby-shower full of lesbian women (mostly couples with kids or getting ready to have babies) definitely made for an interesting evening.  The highlights of the evening were my two friends Stella Artois and Leffe Blonde in the fridge.

Sunday evening after soccer, Sophia gets some assistance in spoiling Suzy (are Kix good for dogs?):
    DSC03710DSC03711DSC03712DSC03714
One really nice thing about Sophia is that she really likes animals.  Besides feeding Suzy, she also does this cute cuddle-up to her (hope to get it on video sometime).  Unfortunately, Suzy does not like it too much and thinks Sophia must be a ram, charging her head-on.  Suzy jumps up from her seat and usually leaves, sometimes growls as our cuddle-bun tries to be cute.  All of these warnings and signs of irritation do not record with our little girl and she keeps cornering Suzy and tries to cuddle-up to her whenever she can.  I hope one of them will learn in some not-so-distant future :)

Sophia finally shows off her walking skills on video (permanent link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4786257377372559668&hl=en):

We made use of the long weekend by going to the California State Railroad Museum with the Lang boys, David and Ethan:

As you can see, she wasn't particularly shy about getting in there with the big kids.  She even figured out how to work the bridge and chose to suck on a rail car to get her share of the germs.  At least she chose a green rail car... Jess' grandpa, who worked for Burlington Northern for most of his life, will appreciate that.

Up to our elbows in SNOT

Sophia hasn't had a cold for a long time.  Despite not being in daycare for most of the previous week, last Sunday night she came down with a cold.  It came on really, really quickly.  At 5pm on Sunday, she had a little bit of a runny nose; by 10pm, she couldn't breathe through her nose at all.  And that began a week of suctioning her nose with this fun little snot-sucking instrument that seems like it should be fairly easy until you aim it at a screaming baby who is being held against her will.  11-month-olds don't quite understand "Mama and Baba need to torture you a little bit so that you can breathe."  I had to use the fun little snot-sucking instrument by myself the other day and it totally felt like borderline child abuse.  The alternative to *NOT* suctioning the snot isn't great... that is, big rivulets of snot running down her face that eventually get smeared all over her cheeks and forehead where it dries into a shiny crust.  Boy, I bet you can just picture it (no picture needed).  That last sentence was a little too descriptive, sorry.  ANYWAY... I think she's on the mend, but it has been a trying week.

It's been pretty chilly here in the mornings.  Hopefully the North Dakotans, who are experiencing temperatures and windchills way below zero, won't kill me for that sentence.  It was just above freezing Thursday morning when took my girls for a walk.  Sophia was extra bundled in double buntings!
    DSC03670
She was so snuggled and happy and warm.  And our sled dog Suzy just pulled us along.  I tried to teach her to say, "Mush, Suzy!! Mush!"  :)

Speaking of Suzy, this is how she helped Esen the other day when he was working on the laundry.
    DSC03666
Well, to be fair, what's not super comfortable about a big, warm pile of clean laundry?

Just a couple more pictures to please Sophia's fans.  Despite being sick, she was still able to muster up the strength to clear her bookshelf.  I'm hoping that eventually "speed bookshelf clearing" will be an olympic sport (or at least something that will earn her a college scholarship)... she's a real superstar at it!

    5.  "Oooooohhhh!!  It's even cuddlier than I thought!"  That's what Sophia seemed to say to me once I finally put Ilke and Lulu's gift into her stroller.  All the babies we passed on the street were sooo jealous.  :)

    6.  Occasionally, and only very occasionally, she is cute and cuddly and I feel like maybe she loves me as much as I love her:

    Finally... Another Guest Blog

Baba has taken over the blog and you get to read about the real deal now!!!
Tomorrow, my mom is leaving us for sunny, vibrant Sydney.. can you believe it???
She has experienced winter in NYC (might have been colder than ND!!!), some spring over here and now she is heading for some hot summer sun.
No matter how great Sydney is, without Sophia it will seem as empty as a bag of chocolate chip cookies left in Jess' office to her.

Babaanne has left us today and we had a fun week with her.  Sophia ditched school everyday except one and many hours were spent playing, walking and screaming.  Yes, Sophia loves to scream and babaanne likes to encourage it.  Me thinks I can make some money on the Maria Callas of the 21st century so keep screaming little girl.  We have also realized how useful it is to have a third person of kin around the house.  Having a family member means having one more person to entertain Sophia... that gives us time to pet Suzy, pick up after Sophia, or just sit down and enjoy a glass of wine for a few seconds.  Sophia had enough energy for all three of us and probably even more :)

    OK, here are some pictures:
Enjoying a crotch-rocket from Kaan and Hande:

Starting to "kiss" (mostly open-mouth, sloppy french-kissing style with whoever or whatever will tolerate it!):
I still think it is a little early to be french-kissing but I guess these kisses are taking place under Jess' watch.  Sophia likes to kiss but also once in a while, she will decide that biting is more fun.  When she bites, her teeth are as sharp as my Global knives and she likes to leave marks.

    Showing off her bunny-rabbit teeth:
    DSC03619
Here, you can see the innocent-looking teeth.  She looks like an angel... until she screams :)

    With babaanne:
    DSC03637DSC03643
Sophia enjoyed spending time with babaanne.  She made it known to her that she doesn't like being held anymore.  She said "I am no more a baby, I am a big girl who can walk up to 20 steps at a time.  Put me down now, I command you!"  We were all very excited about her walking, except Suzy.  Recently, sweet Suzy seems to be extra cranky.  I think a crawling baby was more acceptable to her but a walking toddler probably seems like Godzilla strolling through streets of Tokyo.

But our poor baby has a runny nose now and she is having trouble staying asleep.  She needs a good night's sleep to recover from the playful week with babaanne but poor Sophia keeps waking up.  I guess we might have an unpleasant night ahead of us tonight, better go to bed early.

Finally, Sophia let me in a little secret of hers.  She promised to be even more mobile by the time next set of grandparents are in town and she will be walking/running around all day so that no grandparent gets to have a restful trip to Sacramento, ever!!!  (sounds like our baby is a combination of Dr. No and Stewie Griffin)
    12 January

    Proof!

What started out as a couple of steps has quickly expanded into 10 or more.  Here's a video of her taking a few.  Sorry it took me so long to get one posted!  (permanent link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6731569413967443785&hl=en)

She's really good at cruising along if she can hold onto one of your hands.  I suspect our days of being able to carry her without protest are numbered.  Even now, I think that milk is the only reason I ever get to hold her anymore.

Babaanne leaves us tomorrow for Sydney.  I'm hoping that a guest blogger will post lots of goodies about her visit... hint, hint!
    06 January

    Babaanne is here!

The fun started tonight.  Esen's mom is in town for the week.  Let's see if little miss Sopha Lale can keep up with her grandmother!  :)
    04 January

    First Steps!

Tonight... four steps from Esen over to me.  They weren't even wobbly... so amazing!  While in ND, we placed some bets regarding the date of Sophia's first steps.  I picked January 1st and my grandpa chose January 5th.  Although grandpa is closer, we played by "Price Is Right" rules (closest without going over), so technically I win!  Ha!!  We'll work on getting video, but it might be a little tricky.  As soon as she sees the camera come out, she drops to the ground so that she can crawl over to it with lightening speed!
    03 January

    Is it bedtime yet?

Sophia's response to that question is usually "NO!", especially lately since we haven't quite gotten out of vacation mode and have a hard time getting up at 7am like we normally do.  Last night she was up until 10pm, the little snot.  The daycare information sheet indicated that she had normal naps, but they were CLEARLY fibbing to us because there's just no way that she woke up from an afternoon nap at 3pm and still wasn't sleepy at 10pm.  I strongly suspect that she slept most of the day over there to make up for her lousy night's sleep at home, but that they didn't want to admit to letting her take 5 hours worth of naps.  :)  That just goes to show you that what happens at daycare, stays at daycare.  Thanks to Ilke and Lulu, we were able to dress her accordingly today (see picture below).  Think our daycare provider will know that we're on to her and her lying ways?  We'll just have to see what the info sheet says today...

Maybe this is our problem...  HA!

What on earth was I thinking?

I blame my grandma.  After a few days in her house with all those homemade baked goods and memories of childhood deliciousness, I came home with a baking bug.  Today I gave in and made some apple bars.  The name implies that these are easy little things to whip up, but essentially apple bars are apple pie made in a cookie sheet.  Imagine a big, thin version of apple pie.  That's right... pie dough from scratch that has to be rolled out and put in the cookie sheet (TWICE because of the top), several kinds of applies to peel, core, and slice thinly... what on earth was I thinking?  Could someone please get me one of those Sandra Lee Semi-homemade cookbooks (and FAST)!?  I don't have time for this crap.  I love the idea of Sophia and I spending relaxing Sunday afternoons baking confectionary delights, but until she's able to help me, I think I might have to adjust my expectations.

Our neighbors who watched the kitties will benefit from all of this... I took some apple bars over to them to show our appreciation.  I kinda felt like I had to bring homemade baked goods because they're wholesome folks who will surely appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears that went into my humble but tasty apple bars.

    Happy New Year!

We spent a relaxing evening at home this New Year's Eve.  Esen bought and cooked some cornish game hens, which were quite tasty (the cooked versions especially).

    DSC03576DSC03577DSC03587

Sophia, who was dressed in a New Year's Eve party dress despite not having a party to attend (does going to Target count?), was very interested in what her baba was so busy doing in the kitchen.

    DSC03580DSC03583DSC03584DSC03585

I originally predicted that Sophia would take her first steps on New Year's Day, so we spent some time walking around the house.  It's a good thing she's pretty tall otherwise this activity would seriously kill a person's lower back and hamstring muscles.  (permanent link:  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4550143613819185955&hl=en)

Sophia isn't likely to walk by my predicted date (today!), but she's confided in me that it's her New Year's resolution.  She's also resolved to try some new foods.  In fact, she started the New Year off with some chicken (only the free-range, no-hormones-or-steroids, in-therapy-all-their-lives-to-find-inner-peace kind of chicken, of course!).  I've been thinking for a few days about some nice achievable New Year's Resolutions for myself.  I resolve to:

    1.  ...eat less refined sugar, particularly ice cream.  I won't be nursing Sophia forever and, once she's done, I won't be burning all those extra calories every day.  I think it might be time to replace ice cream with some nice healthy fruit in the evenings.  Perhaps I'll start with some citrus since we have a few hundred oranges on the tree out back.

    2.  ... be more productive, particularly at work.  The fall semester was a real learning experience for me (us) as I got a taste of the nasty job of juggling motherhood and career.  It's time to put that experience to work and get some necessary things done.  They aren't going to give me tenure for having good intentions and cute daughter.

    3.  ... be more patient and use kinder words, particularly with Esen.  Daily life can be a real challenge some times.  I try hard to be nice, but sometimes the sleep deprivation and my inner bitchiness get the better of me.  I would kind of like him to stick around in 2008, so it might be time to be nice enough that I'm not constantly apologizing for being cross.  There's a nice externality to this resolution given that Sophia is now starting to mimic so many things that we do and say... she might also grow up speaking politely.

    4.  ... harness my sense of humor.  On this front, I think I've done a pretty good job in 2007, but there's always room to find new ways to laugh at life and the situations you find yourself in (remember when Sophia had a diaper blow-out, it got all over my shirt, we were out to dinner, and the diaper bag accidentally got left at home?  I sure do.).  I really want Sophia to be a carefree, quick-to-laugh little girl, so I guess it's my (our) job to set a good example.  I should probably move this one up to the #1 slot since success here will likely make all the other resolutions easier to achieve.

Esen tells me that, while Turks *do* celebrate the New Year, they don't put together a list of resolutions.  Interesting.  Guess I'll just have to put together a list for him.  :)  Here's what I've come up with so far.

    1.  Drink more red wine.  Ha! Ha! Ha!!!  (see?  This is me working on resolution #4!)
    2.  Change more poopy diapers.
    3.  Play less soccer and clean the house more.  (Resolution #4 is so much fun!)
    4.  Do more guest-blogging.  This one I'm serious about.  I really like the blogging, but it's time that I get some assistance and you all get a different perspective.

OK... baby girl is up and has locked on to my laptop like a heat-seeking missile (despite having her own kid laptop).  Time to publish this and get her (and me!) out of pajamas.
