31 May Not quite official, but oh so close now...I've been a little hesitant to let myself get too excited and that has meant not posting any pictures, but I think that our house deal is actually going to go through just fine. We're scheduled to close escrow in about two weeks and move in a week after that. There's no new information to be revealed between now and then, so it looks like it should be a done deal. So, here are some pictures of our new place... obviously there will be more to follow this summer after we move in.
The front (not pictured are two super-tall palm trees right at the front of the yard):
The living room and formal dining room are to the left and right, respectively, of the front door:
Because there's room in the kitchen for a decent sized table, we're pretty sure that we'll just use the formal dining room as additional living space. Kids need plenty of room to run around, right? We'll see what we think once we get our stuff moved in.
The kitchen is nice and big with modern appliances and a sliding glass door out to the back yard as well as a door into the garage:
The bedrooms are fairly typical bedrooms. The one nearest the front of the house is painted a nice spring green. This room will eventually be Sophia's (once she moves into a big bed next year) and will also be utilized as a guestroom:
The room is actually quite large, but has large furniture in it, so it doesn't look big in the picture.
The other two bedrooms are at the back of the house next to each other. The other kid room is painted blue. It isn't that big, but the closet is huge. This is where we'll set up the crib, so Sophia will start out here until M2 is ready to move from the basinette to the crib (which we think will happen around Sophia's 2nd birthday).
The master bedroom is painted a nice deep red:
It currently contains an enormous California-King bed and large furniture, so we expect it to feel much more spacious with our more sparse furnishings. I love the red!
There are two bathrooms and both are predominantly black and white. Both have bath tubs with separate glass shower stalls. The main bathroom is in the hall:
It's so much bigger than our current bathroom, that I can't wait to experience how much easier it is to bathe a kid. We're also anxious to have one designated kid-bathroom.
The master bathroom is at the very back of the house off the master bedroom. It is an addition (the house was originally a 3/1) and a very wise use of about 100 square feet. It is big and square and wonderful (and has a door out to the backyard.
We really hope that the backyard will be good, usable space on a daily basis (except during the rainy season). Just outside of the slider from the kitchen is a nicely-sized patio:
And that leads out to a moderate (but nice and flat) grassy area that has a big plum tree and a little shed, which will be utilized as Lucy and Ethel's kitty efficiency:
We envision sitting on the patio with margaritas as we watch the girls chase each other around gleefully. This is almost surely more dream than reality, but a girl can hope, right? :)
The two car garage will be used as storage and, eventually, as a kid playroom. The garage floor was covered in linoleum tile years ago (shortly after it was built in 1953 from the looks of the linoleum pattern). The linoleum is in bad, bad shape and needs to be pulled up (no easy task). Once Esen does that (hee-hee :) ), we'll put down some other sort of sturdy flooring that will withstand all that kids can dish out. Given that Sacramento gets rain for about three months straight, I suspect we'll be happy to have an additional play space.
Well, that's it... 1400 square feet of house... our first house. Nothing too fancy, but it's in good shape and updated relative to many houses built in the 1950s (the start of Sacramento's first big suburb growth). The best part of the house is that it's about a 15 minute *walk* to the Econ building. After paying $4.39/gallon for gas this past week, I think we're both looking foward to such a green commute. We're anxious to see you all here, so come on out! 28 May 15 MonthsSausalito Part IIOur second two days in Sausalito were more low-key than the first two. Part of it is that Sausalito isn't really a big enough place to spend four days in, part of it is that we ran out of steam a bit, and part of it is that the weather didn't always cooperate. Sunday we went out for a walk (toward the park) and discovered a fun street fair. It was actually the "Taste of Sausalito" and there were some bands and some vendors selling street fair style jewelry and so on. We hit the park:
Sophia did *NOT* like walking barefoot on the sand or even having sand poured over her feet. Guess she takes after her prissy mama in that regard. We had a chilly walk back through the street fair and back to the house. Dinner that night was at a nearby Indian restaurant. Thank goodness for the very sweet (and talented) musician. He sang and played for Sophia and kept her entertained. She ate some vegetable pakora (battered and fried cauliflower and potatoes and such), but when I gave her a small piece of my chicken tikka masala, she choked and gagged and screamed. Even the mildest option was clearly too spicy for her little tongue. Fortunately we were just across the street, so I took her home for a bath when her patience (and mine) ran thin.
Our last day in Sausalito involved some packing and cleaning up. Even after just a few days there, I was amazed how much we had spread out. More importantly, Sophia had stolen a whole host of items from the kitchen for toys and the job of rounding up those items (from the bathtub, the diaper bag, the living room floor) was no easy task. I realize now that I didn't take any good pictures of the apartment. There are a few worth sharing, however.
This is a view of the houses on the hill that we'd see on our walk back from town. Ours is down on the water kind of right at the end of the little walk-way and there's a picture of our little balcony:
Our bed had the silliest headboard I think I've ever seen, so I couldn't come away without a picture (or four!):
Talk about a strange thing to wake up to! I was pretty sure that if you put your finger in the gold lion's mouth that it would come to life and eat us in our sleep. Esen, of course, tested this theory and it proved to be false. Still, I didn't trust this thing... or the sword-wielding, long-tongued versions on either side. Yikes!
Since Monday was Babaanne's birthday, we went out to Sushi Ran for dinner, one of the best sushi restaurants in the country. Esen and I had been there before and really, really enjoyed it. Sophia did pretty well for a while. We learned that she really loves edamame and she ate a bunch of nice steamed vegetables. The wasabi wasn't really a big hit... I'm KIDDING!! We didn't give a one year old wasabi! :) As in any restaurant, Sophia reached her limit and made it known to everyone within ear shot (and then some), so we spent the second half of the meal in the courtyard running around. She wasn't the only munchkin out there, so I didn't feel too bad.
We got Gulsen Teyze safely to the airport and Sophia escorted her to the security line before the yawning started. It was perfect timing... she slept the whole drive home to Sacramento. When we got home and got Suzy from the neighbor's house, Sophia's excitement at seeing her puppy was nearly matched by Suzy's excitement at being home and there was a lot of running around paired with baby screaming and puppy barking. We were all up for a while, but it was like a big party to have the family reunited again. :) Vacation is always nice, but coming home is so so sweet, too! 24 May Special Request... Sausalito Part I (for the impatient)We've been in Sausalito for a couple of days now and still have two left. Everyone else is napping at the moment, so I have a bit of time to post some pictures/videos of our trip thus far. We actually got here Thursday night and it was beautiful! The moon was enormous and reflected off the water so nicely. I attempted to get a picture (with San Francisco in the background), but there wasn't anything stable to set the camera on, so the best I got was this blurry thing:
I think it's good enough to give you the idea.
The next morning we enjoyed coffee and play time on the little balcony. It was so incredibly warm and sunny! Sophia just ran up and down (and amazingly didn't fall and scrape her knees all to hell for a change).
As you can see from the pictures, the apartment is right on the water (SF Bay) and we get a little strip of beach during low tide. It's really nice to hear the water in the background even when you're sitting inside.
After our nice relaxing morning (and after Sophia's first nap), we decided to go explore Sausalito a bit. We're within walking distance of the main strip with restaurants and shops and such, so it is an excellent location. Props to Esen for finding such convenient accommodations! After letting Sophia play at a park for a while, we had a nice lunch on the water. She sat still through most of it (mostly the part where she was plowing through a huge plate of macaroni and cheese!). Our walk back to the apartment was a windy one. Given my current weight, I wasn't exactly afraid of blowing away, but I might have put some rocks in Sophia's pockets if she wasn't strapped tightly into her stroller. The rest of the evening was pretty uneventful. We cooked in the house and got the kid bathed and to bed, and nobody was injured in the process. :)
Today was our rainy day, although truthfully it only rained a bit in the morning and was just cloudy the rest of the day. At least you can see San Francisco again... this morning it was just one big grey blob when I looked out over the water. We enjoyed some music in the morning... Sophia-style, that is:
With a kitchen full of new gadgets, who needs toys? Since the weather wasn't very hospitable for walking around town, we opted for an indoor activity and went to the Bay Area Discovery Museum, which came highly recommended by some friends and is only about a mile from where we're staying. It's located practically under the Golden Gate Bridge, so I was able the snap this shot:
The "museum" was awesome! The first room we entered had big waterbed-style "ponds" with lily pad pillows. Sophia was initially alarmed at her new role as a frog:
But she quickly came around after watching some of the other kids and just getting comfortable with things.
The pond was pretty easy for me to plop myself into, but not so easy for a pregnant woman to actually get out of. :) Here's a video of the kid in action (permanent link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5779320659155515147&hl=en):
This frog-themed room also had a cool contraption with frogs in water tubes where the frogs would burp out big bubbles of air when you step on the buttons on the floor:
There was another room that we played in which had some instruments and some cave-like things for kids to crawl around in. We ran into some people that we know there (college friends of Kaan's, one of whom is also an economist that Esen knows), so we talked more than we played. Sophia did her thing without us and made some music that was definitely better than the noisy kitchen-style music from the morning:
Good times were had by all and we explored only a fraction of the museum. We made it home in time for a late lunch (that involved a bottle of wine for the non-pregnant crowd... hence the napping) and an afternoon nap for Sophia. She was talking from her bed for a good 20 minutes before she fell asleep... Baba, baba, baba over and over again. I bet she said it 200 times. She cracks me up.
I think we'll probably get some fresh air once everyone wakes up and then settle in for the evening. Gulsen Teyze and Esen bought the fixings for a surf n' turf dinner, so I'm looking forward to just kicking back and watching them work this evening. :) Stay tuned for Part II in a few days... 21 May Gettin' outta town...We're headed out of town tomorrow... Sausalito... the quaintest of all quaint towns... just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Esen's mom is flying into San Francisco and joining us for a long weekend there. Hey, she was going to be in the neighborhood (and by neighborhood, I mean the States). I'm sure it will be a wonderful (and hopefully relaxing) weekend and I'll post plenty of cute pictures afterwards! Here's one to tide you over:
You might not be able to tell in this pic because it's black and white, but Sophia split her lip open earlier in the day and her lower lip was all purple and swollen. Silly kid just fell and smacked herself on a kitchen chair. Then she fell again today at daycare... scraped up her cheek pretty good in the process. So basically, there might not be any cute pictures to take in the short run if she keeps up this trend of clutsiness. :) Baby and BumpI've been a little slow to post some pictures of M2 (taken more than a week ago now) because I was hoping to simultaneously post some pictures of my expanding belly and I've just been too late in the morning or exhausted in the evening to take those pictures. We finally made that happen this morning! Here's the evidence that everything is proceeding nicely.

Internal:
Our favorite ultrasound picture is this totally creepy one:
That's the baby's head on the left and body on the right. The creepy part is the terminator-style left eyeball staring out at us. I don't think she enjoyed us invading her privacy. Yikes! Alright... we'll stay out of your territory until you're ready to reveal yourself. Sure hope that eyeball isn't as creepy on the outside come September! 19 May Ride 'em CowgirlI often worry about falling into this trap where Esen is the one Sophia goes to for playing and I'm the one she goes to for cuddling. I want some play time, too!! Of course, in my current condition it's not always so easy to get down on the floor and roll around with her. Tonight the three of us were playing on the living room floor and I decided to lay down (in exhaustion). Sophia saw her opening and rushed me! She was on me like a grizzly on a raw t-bone before I even knew what hit me!
Then she got all cute and cuddly and I thought we were done:
But our cuddle time quickly turned into a rodeo with a side order of tickling (permanent link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6262070037297473170&hl=en):
I think we should both sleep well tonight!
18 May Beating the HeatA picture is worth a thousand words, right? This is the themometer outside our front door... it was in the shade when this picture was taken. After several 100+ degree days, we finally had had enough. This morning we filled the inflatable pool and let the sun warm the water to a reasonable temperature. We figured Sophia would love it. Here's a picture of the shangri-la just waiting for some bathing beauties.
Now, I don't have a maternity bathing suit yet, so I was pretty happy that we were located in our secluded backyard. My non-maternity bathing suit is not particularly attractive at this point. Still, despite this fact and the high probability of being photographed in this unflattering state, I braved the water and found it to be deliciously refreshing. After about three attempts at inserting Sophia into the pool with me over the course of an hour or so, we finally got her to pose for one picture:
As you can see, she was reaching for Baba to save her from this watery nightmare. I decided to just kick back and enjoy for a while longer and wasn't all that disappointed to get the whole pool to myself. :)
We also escaped to Ikea for a bit yesterday to beat the heat. At 6pm on a Saturday night, Ikea is just not very crowded and Sophia was happy to push her own stroller through much of the store. It was nice and cool and we got some decorating ideas for the new house. The best part of every Ikea trip for me is the $1 soft serve ice cream cones that they sell right outside of the cash registers. Sophia talked me into sharing:
It was a little messy, but I'd lick the cone into a little point and then she'd eat that part. I think she liked it better than the popsicles.
I guess I didn't blog about my Mother's Day last weekend, and I have a few cute pictures from that worth sharing. Esen and Sophia went to get me some Mother's Day donuts. The donuts went nicely with some coffee in my new mug:
We also got to enjoy a houseguest last weekend... this is Arlo:
We dog-sat the neighbor's dog... just for one night. Sophia was seriously delighted when she woke up and discovered TWO PUPPIES in her house. Arlo was a perfect gentleman (except for his attempt to wedge his 60 pound dog ass in between Esen and I in bed) and was really patient with Sophia:
Suzy really likes Arlo, but I think she was getting a little jealous of Arlo being so welcomed into the family.
We did some more dog-related stuff *this* weekend. We went on a puppy-playdate to see one of Suzy's old dog park friends, Rosie! Suzy stayed with Rosie's family during many of our trips and we hadn't seen them in a long time since we haven't traveled as much in the past year. Rosie has a new puppy-sister (Peggy Sue) and it was lots of fun to get all three dogs together. Sophia was in heaven. We've never seen her so at-ease in a new environment! She was off of my lap in minutes and running around their house playing with the dogs. It was really nice to see her so comfortable with such sweet dogs. :) 15 May Naked BabyAs some of you know, Sophia is not so fond of leaving her bath and putting on a diaper and clothes. We've tried just toughing it out and letting her scream. We've tried bribing her with animal crackers or something else she likes to munch on. And more recently we've tried just letting her hang out naked for a little bit before wrestling her into some clothing. Here's a video of our current strategy in action. It's particularly suitable I think because the temperatures have skyrocketed in Sacramento (as in "over 100" skyrocketed). (permanent link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5349028416589498170&hl=en)
This strategy has resulted in her peeing on the rug once, so I'm not sure how long we'll stick with it. :) Although she used to behave rather nicely in exchange for some animal crackers, cheesey goldfish crackers are the current snack-of-choice. Here's a little video of her munching on them *before* a bath one night. I think she's awfully sweet to share with her puppy. She doesn't offer any to us, however, so I guess you have to beg to get them. (permanent link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3925794137062819001&hl=en)
And last but not least, I've got a little video of Sophia picking up a new skill... one that will help her on the job market some day. Every kid needs to know how to give a proper handshake, right? (permanent link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2059800361059072749&hl=en)
Actually, we've taught her to come and give you a kiss, too, but I just haven't gotten that on video yet. It's pretty cute. Although, if you happen to be the unfortunate one who gets a kiss *after* Suzy, Sophia is less about puckering up and more about just opening her mouth for some licking... sorta sloppy. 06 May It's an interesting theory anyway... and more scientific than the usual methods that people claim to be reasonable methods of predicting the sex of a baby. Here's a somewhat lengthy excerpt from a recent article in the Economist ("Sugar and Spice", Apr 24, 2008): "Although a child's sex is genetically determined by the father, mothers can influence the development of one sex rather than another. Studies in animals and humans suggest that there are links between the sex of a child and the mother's diet and her levels of stress. Although the mechanisms are not well understood, this appears to have evolutionary roots which favour greater reproductive success. Hence in hard times when food might be scarce, daughters were more valuable because their chances of providing offspring would have been greater than sons, who might get killed or fail to find a mate. But in good times sons were a better bet because they could father more children. Those same evolutionary influences persist in modern life. New research shows a clear link between higher energy intake around the time of conception and the birth of sons--especially by mothers who eat cereals for breakfast. The study, by a team of researchers from the Universities of Exeter and Oxford, looked at the eating habits of 740 British mothers expecting their first child. The overall sex ratio of their children was close to 50:50. But when split into three groups according to the number of calories the mothers consumed around the time of conception, the picture changed. Of those with the highest energy intake, 56% had sons, against 45% in the group with the lowest calorie intake. Moreover, besides consuming more calories the women with sons were more likely to have eaten a higher quantity and range of nutrients, especially breakfast cereals." Esen forwarded this to me today because I eat cereal almost every morning for breakfast (or maybe because he just thinks that I *clearly* fall into the high calorie intake group... he did make a snide remark about my increasing body mass just the other day). I'll eat toast if we're out of milk or occasionally eggs on the weekends (particularly if he cooks them for me!), but I'd say that I eat cereal 95 percent of the time. Guess he thinks we're having a boy, although I'll leave it to him to come out officially with his guess. 05 May Guessing RequiredOne week from today we go for our ultrasound and learn whether we're adding to the Onur female soccer team or starting up a coed league. I *KNOW* that some of you are anxious to have this information. I think I like the way Kaan and Hande handled things with a very simple rule: if you don't guess, you don't get to know. So, boy or girl? You have to guess and the clock is ticking. Personally, I think it's a girl and that we'll get to reuse all those pink clothes after all. 04 May An interesting twist on the storyWe all have our own parenting style I suppose, and I'm usually happy to let Esen develop his. Still, I couldn't help but raise my eyebrows a little bit at this one.
As Sophia was peacefully reading the page above, Esen chimed in and named them "Yummy" and "Yummier", and then declared that he wasn't "raising no vegetarian." Nice. As I see it, this strategy of his will have one of two outcomes: (1) Sophia doesn't have that moment when she realizes that the delicious food she's eating is the same as the sweet animals from the petting zoo, or (2) she'll be so screwed up that she'll be a vegan. Time will tell, yes?
We spent quite a bit of time at various parks this weekend enjoying the nice weather.
Some time in the sandbox:
Some time meeting new friends:
For this next one (with the Latino Olsen twins), the one little girl on her left tapped Sophia on the shoulder so that she would turn around for the picture. :)
Fortunately, Suzy was so enthralled with the squirrels in the nearby tree that she tolerated three toddlers touching her at once. Normally this would never fly.
That's all we got. I'm exhausted (despite good naps this weekend) and anxious to go back to work! 03 May Jealous? You should be:
Californians might have to sell their souls to the devil to buy a house, but fruit grows on trees here. Seems like a fair trade to me!
As soon as my immigrant worker gets home from soccer, I'm going to send him up on a ladder to get more before the birds discover our cherry tree. These were just the ones that I could reach from the ground, but they'll make a tasty morning snack. 02 May We have a house?... at least, we have a strong possibility of having a house. It could all still fall apart, however, so I'm not quite ready to do the full-blown WE HAVE A HOUSE! anouncement complete with pictures of the place. I don't want to jinx anything, but the contract is signed and the inspections have been ordered. Assuming that nothing insane shows up on the inspections next week, I think this is a done deal. I'm hopeful that we'll be moving into a nice 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home with room for kids, dog, cats, and two adults... and even room for a couple of visitors who want to join in our little bit of everyday insanity! Stay tuned next week for the more official (and excited) announcement. :) |
